The “butterfly effect:” In climate science, it’s the poetic expression of the theory that seismic changes can be traced back to tiny origins. First published in the 1970s as a scientific paper titled “Deterministic Non-periodic Flow”, the phrase captured attention when featured in a lecture with a different title: “Does the flap of a butterfly’s wings in Brazil set off a tornado in Texas?”
